Spelling Inquiry Reflection

The children have enjoyed playing the spelling games that I introduced in the first term. There are a few management things I need to change. Instead of the whole class working on the same activity I will have a rotation system that is similar to the reading activities system. It is important that there is an expectation and accountability that the children complete their spelling tasks.

I have just been going through our school spelling progressions and have been reflecting on how I teach spelling. Our children are expected to learn the essential spelling lists at certain year levels. Also they need to know blends and ways of writing sounds etc. While I was reflecting I was thinking it's a lot to cover and was becoming confused and overwhelmed. Then the penny dropped! Spelling lists are knowledge and blends and sound knowledge etc are strategies.

The children are enjoying the spelling rotations. I have found that it is difficult to undo the learning of a misspelled word especially when it has become a habit. It takes a long time for words to become secure. Children can spell a word correct and then next time write it incorrect. I have found that Mnemonics,( we call them 'spelling cheats') helps the children to learn and retain tricky words. Also I have found they work best when the mnemonic is made with the chid.
For spelling to be effective it needs to be integrated into every part of the school day as well as specifically taught.
